Lock all the doors,
Shutter Island’s hitting cinemas this week. We talked to Leo Di Caprio about what gives him the shivers...
This movie scared the hell out of us. What movie comes to mind that you’ve been scared by?I’ve been freaked out by quite a few films.
The Shining
is the first one that comes to mind. Those iconic images of the twins,
the hallways being flooded with blood, and Nicholson with the axe. That
is definitely one that creeps me out.
What scares you in real life? What scares me in real life? I guess ignorance. [Laughs.]
What about things like spiders? Fear of flying?Spiders,
no. I guess I don’t like to get needles in me. That I really don’t like
– so shooting in a hospital for six months was perfect, I suppose.
[Laughs.]
Often on a movie as dark as this, people do pranks to lighten up the set – was there any of that going on?I
never play pranks. There’s really not enough time. If you have time to
play pranks, to me that means you don’t have enough to do work-wise.
Is there anything about your Leo-mania days after Titanic that you look back on with fond memories?Oh
sure I have a lot of fond memories of those days – just being able to
hang out with my friends and you know, gallivant around and do whatever
the hell I wanted. Those were carefree years! [Laughs.] Ahh, let me go
back to those years!
What advice would you give someone like Robert Pattinson who is going through that now?I
don’t have any advice for these guys. I wouldn’t want anyone to give me
advice and I think they’re very level-headed, from what it seems – I
don’t know them. I’ve met Zac Efron but I’ve never met Robert
Pattinson. I wouldn’t give them any advice other than just stick to the
work, do what you came in here for, and like they know, all this
publicity stuff is fleeting and there will be a new focus one day and
the only thing that will last is the work that you put into it while
you had the opportunity to get good jobs and I think they know that.
What music are you listening to at the moment?Absolutely nothing. Isn’t that weird? My life is kind of music-less right now.
Why is that?What
was the last thing I downloaded? God, I haven’t even turned on my iPod
in like a month. I listen to other people’s music – whatever they have
on or whatever is on the radio.
So you didn’t listen to anything in particular for this movie to get into the mood? No, I’m not that type of dude.
What type of dude are you?
[Laughs.]
The type of dude that memorises his lines and thinks about what he’s
going to say the next day. I don’t really get inspiration like that. I
mean, I love music and I’m a huge music buff but I don’t sit there and
put headphones on to get into a mood. I just strangle somebody until I
get angry. No, I’m just kidding. I make jokes [laughs].
