Kristin Cavallari says she’s not really a bitch, it’s just the way she’s edited...
Did you feel weird going to Speidi’s wedding?Absolutely, I was so nervous walking into the church, because I hadn’t seen any of those people in so long and no one knew I was coming. [Laughs.] So it was like, ‘Ok, go ahead Kristin!’ and I was like, ‘Omigod’. I was really, really nervous and I didn’t know what to expect.
Totally. Especially at a wedding – not even just a party or a bbq or whatever.Exactly! And by the way, when I walked in and sat down, I almost felt bad, like I was taking away from their wedding, you know what I mean? Like, it was Heidi and Spencer’s wedding and then everyone was looking at me and whispering. I felt kind of bad.
On the other hand, it was Spencer and Heidi’s wedding so it’d be pretty hard to take that much attention from them!
True.
They’ve released that book, How To Be Famous. Do you think they know exactly what they’re doing?I think so, yeah. I mean, y’know, everyone’s still talking about them, so they’re doing something right.
Everyone thinks they’re complete idiots though!Yeah but they’re also making a lot of money, and they only want people to be talking about them. Listen, I mean, I wouldn’t want that, but for them, they’re completely content with what they’re doing. So for them it works, y’know.
Are they doing it purely to make a nest egg and then they’ll opt out, or do you think they’ll stick around?Yeah, I think they want to make a lot of money, but I also think they’re kind of messing with the system, like they’re just seeing how far they can go. That in itself is pretty funny. I mean, they’re messing with the public, which to me is hilarious. It’s kind of genius on their part.
What’s the best thing about being on TV again? For me, just to have a steady job. I mean, I absolutely love doing movies and I want to keep doing movies, but you know, you work for three months and then you don’t know the next time you’re gonna work. So I just like being on TV for the fact that I have a steady paycheck! Um, and then, you know, I like working, I like being busy, so I like having a job.
Speaking of having a job, someone who doesn’t is Stephanie Pratt. What do you think about her not getting her contract renewed?Oh! I heard that, I didn’t know if that was confirmed. Maybe, though, ’cause she wasn’t at the season finale. I definitely heard a bit about that but I don’t know enough to really comment, I don’t know whose decision it was or what the deal is.
Do you think she made a big contribution to the show? Not really. She wasn’t even really on it that much this season.
Good point.I mean, you know, I like Stephanie, I think she’s great, but if you look at it strictly from that point of view, she was on a few episodes.
We heard that she’d chucked a huge tantrum when she heard what different people were getting paid.Ok, well I’ve heard like five different numbers that I’m supposedly getting, so actually to believe any of that stuff is crazy. I mean, I’ve seen different articles and different rumours about how much I’m getting and none of them have been true, so it’s just kind of funny.
Has it been strange for you to see LC grow as famous as she has, over the years, having gone to school with her?
No, because you know, there was
Laguna Beach. For the first two years we were all going through it together, and she went to do
The Hills. So yeah, I guess a little bit. But more than anything, I dunno. To be honest, after
Laguna Beach, it sort of seemed like anything was possible. We’d never even thought we were going to be on TV, so it was all really exciting for all of us, and because we went through it together for the first two years, we were all just really excited for each other about what we were all doing.
I think a lot of people expected you to be the one who would...Yeah.
Yeah, we thought you’d get your own show. Have people said that to you a lot?Yeah, I was offered my own show, but I didn’t want to do it. I kinda wanted to really just focus on acting. I liked doing
Laguna Beach and everything, but you know, I was 18 when that was all happening, and it was a lot to take in, with the whole fame thing and moving to LA. It was a lot for me and I kinda needed to just step away from it for a little while.
Are you glad you made that decision?Yeah, I’m really happy with my decision to leave for five years, and I’m also really glad with my decision to come back. I just feel like the timing for everything was great.
Beyond season 6 or whatever else happens with The Hills, what are your plans?I want to start producing reality shows and I want to go behind the camera – I think that would just be a ton of fun. And then I also want to keep acting. And I don’t know, maybe do something with shoes or something. I kinda want to do everything.
What’s the worst thing about being back on TV?The worst thing about the show that I’m on is that everyone thinks that they know you, and they know your life. I was at a Lakers game last week and this guy came up to me saying ‘Oh hey, Kristin’, like he knew me, and so then I was like, ‘Oh heeeeey!’ and trying to remember how I knew him. And then he asked if he could take a picture with me and I felt like a dumbass. People think they know you so they approach you as if they know you and it’s awkward.
Have you ever said, ‘Don’t you know who I am?’Oh my God, no! I think that is the lamest thing you can do.
Have you ever been mistaken for another celebrity?People say I look like Carrie Underwood. I’m probably shorter than her though, I’m only 5’3 and a half.
Have you ever been arrested?Yes. I’ve been arrested a few times. It was all when I was young, in junior high and early high school. One time I snuck out and the cops took us home – oh actually, that’s happened twice. And then I got caught for shoplifting. God, that was dumb. I was shoplifting clothes at Abercrombie and Fitch, and now I’m banned from that Abercrombie and Fitch for life. Funny, they’ve never sent me anything for free… maybe one day they’ll forgive me.
Have you ever faked illness to get out of a social obligation?Yeah. I use that quite a bit, actually. Nothing like a friend’s birthday or anything like that, but I get invited to so many parties and events and sometimes I just don’t feel like putting makeup on and going out.
Apart from your house and car, what’s the most expensive thing you own?Probably a diamond ring that I have. It was given to me as a gift by the jeweller. It was actually the coolest thing I’ve ever been given. Screw Abercrombie and Fitch!
What do you dislike most about yourself?I think that I’m really stubborn but usually I like to stay focused on the positive.
What do you like most about yourself?I think that I’m really loyal and trustworthy, and I think I’m a really good friend. That may not come across on the show, but I really am. I’m not good friends with any of the girls on the show, so you don’t really get to see how loyal and trustworthy I am. They only show one side of me, which I don’t think is really who I am.
Are you happy to keep it that way?Yeah. To be honest, yeah. You know,
The Hills is a job. It’s my job, and it’s a TV show, and I can’t really get too emotional about how I’m portrayed because I know how I really am, my friends know how I really am, and when I meet people I think they’re usually pleasantly surprised.
Do you think they’ve put you in a box based on the way you were edited for Laguna Beach?Yeah, absolutely.
You were pretty young when you were doing Laguna.Well, right. And also, Stephen was my boyfriend and I really loved him, and TV kind of came in and tried him to hang out with Lauren all the time and I got really defensive! I was really hurt! So of course I was going to be kind of a bitch, you know? I mean, I don’t think I was really a bitch in that situation, I think Lauren was trying to steal my boyfriend. And I of course got the bitch label because I’m very opinionated and have a strong personality.
Well, we loved you.Well, thank you. [Laughs.]
The Hills Season Five is out on DVD this week.
